Chapter nine

Bryan

After the call with Lily, I felt terrible. I hadn’t realized Seaview was all over the news. It was an epidemic, and Lily was right. I needed to contact some international hospitals and borrow their best hands.

Good thing I had the connections. The Isabel Memorial Clinic, controlled by Richard Gatsby, was the perfect fit. They did a lot of clinical trials and had an outstanding reputation for dealing with widespread diseases like this.

Lily's words kept ringing in my ears; I wondered why none of the board directors had told me. This was why I increased their salaries, and they couldn’t even do their jobs.

I couldn’t wait for the following day to call Richard. He owed me. If he wasn’t sleeping, I was optimistic he’d pick up.

“Hey, doctor.”

“Wait a minute, you called me! Like, you actually picked up the phone and called,” he said, utterly surprised. I never called anyone just for pleasure. He probably figured I was calling on business. “To what do I owe the honor?”

“I need your help with something,” I said and paused for a while.

“Anything for you, Bryan!”

“I need your best hands at my hospital to take care of a dangerous infection in Seaview. Not sure you’ve heard, but I own Hospital Royal now. Just send me some pairs of your best hands. I have someone who will brief them on everything they need to know. She has a different opinion from that of the senior medical directors, and I want them to work with her. I’m giving her control over the entire operation, and I need two of your best transplant surgeons.” He said without pausing for breath.

“That’s a lot of requests, Bryan; I wouldn’t do this for anyone else, but not to worry, I will send you my best hands before dark tomorrow. I’ll make all the preparations to get them down there.”

“Great! Thanks, Richie; this will save a lot of lives. I just need them for two weeks. We have a group of experienced medical personnel on the ground; I’m sure once they have the expertise, we can handle subsequent cases ourselves.” I added.

“That’s a brilliant idea. You’ll get the hands you need tomorrow evening. Make reservations for a team of six medical personnel; I’ll give you all the help you need.”

“I’ll convert an empty hall of the hospital into a clinic specialized for treating these cases. Whatever it is, I’m sure your experienced team will put a name to it.”

“Okay, brilliant,” he said.

“Thanks, man, I owe you one.”

I took a deep breath of relief after the call. I had a trip to plan.

“Mandy, I’ll be going to Seaview,” I told my house caretaker. She had been my nanny since I was three. After my mother died from cancer, she took care of me like I was her child. When I told her to come with me when I moved to New York, she agreed without any questions asked.

She started packing the clothes I would need, and, surprisingly, she packed heavy this time around, like she knew I wouldn’t be returning any time soon.
